License: what you can and cannot do
FYRwall is free software under Apache-2.0 with Commons Clause (the
Commons Clause License Condition v1.0). In plain terms:
What you can do
- Use FYRwall for any purpose, personal or commercial, for free
- Fork it, modify it, study it, redistribute it
- Self-host it for yourself, your company, or your clients
- Embed it as a feature inside a larger product or service, including a
paid one
- Build paid products and services around it: consulting, integrations,
plugins, tooling, supporting infrastructure
What you cannot do
- Sell FYRwall itself: no charging for the software or a copy of it
- Offer a paid product or service whose value derives entirely or
substantially from the software's functionality (this includes paid
managed hosting of FYRwall alone)
- Use the FYRwall or PotenFYR names, logos or trademarks to imply
endorsement - your fork or integration is yours, not ours
If FYRwall is a minor feature of something bigger that you sell, you are
fine. The line is about selling the firewall manager itself.
Attribution
If you redistribute FYRwall (or a modified version), your distribution
must carry the license notices, and those notices must include the
Commons Clause condition alongside the Apache-2.0 text. Keep the
file with your distribution.
Why this license
The Commons Clause draws one bright line: FYRwall stays free and open,
and nobody resells it as-is. Everything else - including commercial use
as a component of your own product - is encouraged. The
file is the authoritative legal text; this page is the plain-English
version.
